The purpose of this section is to outline basic procedures and precautions typical of abating a small area of potentially toxic mold. It is not intended as a complete project design outline for major abatement. Rather, it's purpose is to review a simplified protocol for limiting the spread of the mold and providing protection for those potentially exposed.

The Project: Potentially toxic mold (Stachybotrys) was identified in a 2 foot by 3 foot section of a sheetrock wall on a shower surround in a residential building. The bath had been scheduled for renovation, and the mold is being abated prior to construction activity to prevent the mold from being spread to other areas of the home. One of the concerns is that the mold may be present behind the wall within the wall cavity, not just on the sheetrock itself.

Moisture meter confirms damp wall material. (Although not shown, visible mold was present on the lower portion of the wall. Testing showed it to be stachybotrys.)
