Bay Area Air Quality Management District

is the local San Francisco Bay Area EPA designee


Local Air Pollution agencies develop and enforce regulations that encompass the Federal NESHAP (National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants) regulations. This is the standard which requires inspections for, and removal of, asbestos prior to renovation or demolition.

The Federal Standard [40 CFR Part 61] covers facilities which includes all public and commercial buildings and ships. In general, private residences and apartment buildings with less than 5 units are excluded from federal NESHAP. (Local APCD/AQMD generally include private residences.)
